In Paris past month I did some sketching at one particular of my favourite spots, the Medici Fountain in the Luxembourg Gardens.
This is a small movie preview of me sketching. The total 10-moment video sharing the system of producing these two sketches is a cost-free bonus system obtainable to my atelier Members on the Classes web site.
The statues on the fountain are by Auguste Ottin, and represent the large cyclops Polyphemus, in bronze, finding the sea-nymph Acis with her human lover, Galatea, in white marble. In the Greek fantasy, jealous Polyphemus kills Acis, so Galatea transforms her lover into an immortal river spirit.
The fountain and grotto were being made for Marie de’ Medici’s Still left Bank palace, produced in the 1620’s. In 1811 the fountain was restored and moved to its present-day spot, and the statues have been included at that time.
I very first discovered the fountain on my high college journey to France, in 1988. I sat and sketched the sculptures on that vacation as nicely, in a prolonged-misplaced sketchbook unfortunately. I stop by the fountain every single time I return to Paris considering that then.
