Nicole Pangas is a full time artist and studio potter living and doing the job in Detroit, Michigan. This time of the year skulls are amped up but how is it that skulls are seasonless? They are welcome any time of the calendar year.
I indicate, how do I say this, loss of life is a portion of our lives, like each day and I consider that everyone relates to it in their possess way and occasionally it’s attractive and in some cases it is ritual. I really do not know how to place it, it’s section of our each day and it’s mortality, you know, there is always war likely on and sickness, it is just component of our cultures.
Are you a person who has a dim goth kind of concept for your everyday living or is it just the skulls?
(Laughter) It relies upon on the working day. There is a darkness. My work was usually dark. I( just was reminded my grandfather started a meat business in downtown Akron back in the fifties and he came over from Greece and so this meat plant was 1 stage up from the slaughterhouse and he died really younger and so my father took it around. It was the loved ones enterprise. And so as kids we would run all-around this meat packing plant and there would be sides of beef in the cooler and usually some form of carcass all-around the dwelling. This could be off-topic but you mature up in this realm of useless animals and meat. I really do not know, I assume it just sort of snowballed and I imagine I experienced a lot of stress as a child. My sister taught gross anatomy and would clearly show my pieces in the freezer and you know you review figure drawing and I consider all these unique little channels kind of came into my perform.
Are you astonished at the results of your work?
Of course and no. Sometimes I’m like, Wow, look what I do for a residing. It is type of odd. Section of what I actually like is meeting my consumers and I get to know what type of pottery they like and what kind of skulls and glaze and why men and women are attracted to individual skulls. It is genuinely curious, it is like a cultural investigation. Unique societies have various skulls in their art and rituals, ceremonies, what not. I’m generally drawn to all types of cultures. Anthropology was often interesting to me and architecture and you are dealing with spirits and the past and it is all very attention-grabbing.
Why do you promote on Etsy?
So you know, Etsy has come under fire just lately for their hike in charges and stuff like that and a ton of individuals have jumped ship from Etsy but I like Etsy due to the fact they consider care of all the things for me and I have been on there very long ample and I have the entire thing down, it’s completely seamless for me. I just have to take the photographs, make my listings, and offer and ship it and Etsy can take treatment of the buyer’s and seller’s safety, there is all the regulatory things that comes about, they just take treatment of revenue tax. If you are accomplishing international shipping, all the customs, almost everything. They do it all. So I just truly feel like for me it’s wholly seamless.

(laughter) Certainly.

I have a handful of months, I don’t know. (laughter) Excellent concern.
